Goals of Spanish Language Programme

Moate Community School takes great pride in this Spanish language initiative. A primary goal of the programme is to instil in all students the full realisation that: Language is the key to understanding the world around us. Language opens the doorway to a very unique and enlightening interaction with our fellow citizens of the world. Language enables us to develop a true appreciation for what makes us all different yet worthy of respect and understanding. It is also the goal of the program to provide students with the pleasures of language learning and the access that the study of Spanish provides today, access not only to careers in our global economy but also to the cultural treasures of the Spanish Speaking world.

Communicative Approach/Target Language

The programme, which embraces a communicative approach, places particular emphasis on immersion in the target language. Subsequently classes are conducted to the greatest possible extent in Spanish and students have made wonderful progress adapting to this approach.

Interdisciplinary Focus

An integral part of the programme design is an interdisciplinary focus. The study of any language and culture must draw on the real life connections from which it is derived. Subsequently every opportunity is taken to integrate authentic experiences into the language classroom and of course to draw those vital connections to other areas of study. Units of work have involved direct overlap with subjects such as history and geography. Our Music Department has provided expertise and a practical introduction to our study of Spanish/Latin music. The Art Department has greatly enhanced our study and understanding of Spanish art. Our Home Economics Department has generously facilitated a practical introduction to the preparation of Spanish cuisine (Spanish Tortilla).
