Introduction

This unit provides us with the necessary language to examine and analyze a broad spectrum of Spanish cuisine. Your path of investigation will provide you with insights into customs surrounding traditional dishes, ingredients and methods of preparation.

    The Task

    Group Assignment

    In groups of four/five you will research the cuisine of your assigned country., background information. You will provide any necessary information that will help one gain an understanding of daily and seasonal practices that incorporate food and its’ preparation. A final component, peer teaching, will require students to formulate five questions to ensure audience involvement and participation. As a group you will research, consult and co-design an informative background presentation of the cuisine of your assigned country.

    Individual Assignment

    Individually students will select one traditional appetizer, one main plate and one desert. You will analyze each dish based on; A. ingredients and B. methods of preparation. Again students must formulate two questions to serve peer teaching component, for each dish presented.
    Group members will come together once again to prepare a multi-media presentation of their group and individual projects.

    Here are some questions to guide group and individual research

    • What are common meal times in this country?
    • How is food used in family celebrations?
    • How is food used in national celebrations?
    • Have you had an opportunity to sample this cuisine ? If so, give your oppinion.
    • What ingredients are used?
    • What are the methods of preparation?

    The Process

    To accomplish the task, complete the following steps:

    Group Process

    1. 1.A Over the course of the next few days you will be keeping a chronological journal of your research and the information you have acquired. At the end of our research period you will work with your group to provide an introductory background in Spanish, to the cuisine and the associated customs for your assigned country. B. During this process you will pool the research acquired and together select relevant information. As a unified team you will formulate questions, write, self assess and peer-edit. As a final step in this process the group will design a media presentation to illustrate the end product.
      Presentations in a multimedia presentation may include sound, pictures, video or any other element to convey your findings.

      Individual Process

    2. During your initial 2/3 day period of research each student will have had an opportunity to examine a broad selection of traditional dishes . Students will select one appetizer, one main plate and one desert. Each student will then provide in Spanish, 1. the ingredients and 2. the methods of preparation for each selection.
    3. Each student will design a presentation in Spanish selecting the medium of presentation you prefer to illustrate your work.

    Evaluation

    Students will be evaluated in three main categories
    A. Written language B. Oral Language Presentation C. Group Work

    Conclusion

    Through your own research and that of your classmates, you now have had an opportunity to examine a variety of traditional Spanish dishes and the customs associated with them in each country. How does Spanish cuisine compare with the cuisine of your country? Is food and it's preparation a significant part of our family and national celebrations? At a later date, students within their group will have an opportunity, to select one recipe from their accumulated work and prepare this traditional dish in our home-economics room
