Religion Department

The Religion department provides a comprehensive Religious education programme catering for the spiritual and educational needs of our students.

Religion Personnel

The department has a staff of five full time teachers. All members of the department have appropriate qualifications and continuously update their skills and teaching pedagogy.

 Religion at Junior Level and Senior Level

 Aims at Junior and Senior Level

  • To foster an awareness that the human search for meaning is common to all peoples, of all ages and at all times
  • To explore how this search for meaning has found, and continues to find, expression in religion
  • To identify how understandings of God and religious traditions, and in particular the Christian tradition, have contributed to the culture in which we live, and continue to have an impact on personal life-style, inter-personal relationships and relationships between individuals and their communities and contexts
  • To appreciate the richness of religious traditions and to acknowledge the non- religious interpretation of life
  • To contribute to the spiritual and moral development of the student

 

Objectives of Religious Education at Junior and Senior Level

  • To prepare for State Examinations at Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate Levels
  • At Transition Year level to explore Social Awareness Issues and complete project for Young Social Innovators Competition with view to participating in national competition
  • At Senior level to explore Moral, Philosophical, Justice, Social and Religious Issues in the Context of M.C.S Mission Statement
  • To facilitate learning around professed faith as well as knowledge of various Religious Denominations.
  • To facilitate the students involvement in religious rituals
  • To prepare for school based assessment at Junior and Senior level

 

Religion Facilities

 The Religion department has facilities, which include personal computers with internet connection, video, overhead projection, notice boards, white boards and data projectors.
All teachers in the religion department have rooms with posters and students’ work, which reflect the subject area. The resources and equipment of the department facilitate the use of a wide variety of teaching methodologies. The school is fortunate to have an oratory and teachers and their classes avail of it frequently.

Religion Department Activities

The chaplain and the religion department work closely together in celebrating liturgical events for example

  • November Remembrance Evening
  • Advent Prayer Service
  • Ash Wednesday
  • Confessions at Easter

The Religion department are also involved in the following activities

  • Fundraising
  • Pastoral Care
  • Anti-Bullying Committee
  • Rainbows
  • RSE/SPHE Programme
