History Department – The History Department offers the subject at both Junior and Leaving Certificate level, giving students a valuable insight into our heritage and past, and the lessons that can be learned from the lives of our predecessors.

 History Personnel

The department has a staff of seven teachers who are imbued with a deep sense of commitment and knowledge in the subject, which greatly helps in allowing our students to foster an appreciation and admiration of the subject. A number of staff members have been involved in in – service training and workshops, which is vital to up – skilling and introducing new ideas and innovations to the history classroom. The department has a dedicated subject co–ordinator each year. Regular departmental meetings take place and this provides an opportunity for the history teachers to explore ways of promoting and developing the subject throughout the entire school community.

  Leaving Cycle History

 The course investigates:

  • A Research Study Report
  • Modern Ireland: Movements for Political and Social Reform (1870 – 1914)
  • Modern Ireland: The Pursuit of Sovereignty and the impact of Partition (1912 – 1949).
  • Modern Ireland: Government, Economy and Society in the Republic of Ireland (1949 – 1989).
  • Modern Ireland: Politics and Society in Northern Ireland (1949 – 1993).
  • Modern Europe: Dictatorship and Democracy In Europe (1920 – 1945).
  • Modern Europe: Division and Realignment in Europe (1945 – 1992).
  • Modern Europe: The United States and the World (1945 – 1989).

  History Facilities

 The History Department has a range of extensive facilities, with each teacher based in their own classroom. These facilities include personal computers with access to internet and data projectors for the use of powerpoint presentations and relevant historical audio and visual clips. Whiteboards, overhead projectors, notice boards and an extensive library with material relating to the subject is available to each teacher. The history teachers classrooms all reflect the subject with prominent displays of students project work very much in evidence. The resources and equipment of the department facilitate a wide variety of teaching methodologies.

History Department Activities

  • As a department, we continually strive to raise awareness of the subject within the school community by immersing our students in the subject through various approaches and activities. These include:
  • Class based projects which allow students to work together and independently, investigating a variety of historical topics.
  • Day trips for Junior students, which give a hands – on approach to learning.
  • Revision table quizzes in class, which allow for a fun based and informative way of learning and revising the subject.
  • Using the medium of the internet as a way to pique and sustain students interests.
